About Gary

My principal philosophy for teaching music is that music becomes important when my pupils can take items learned through music and apply them to situations beyond academia. As an educator, I want to see my students become very successful in whatever jobs they might have after graduation. If any student under my tutelage is unsuccessful, I first ask myself “What more could I have done for a better outcome?” I want for my students to become critical thinkers, sound decision makers, problem solvers and lifelong learners.

About the lesson

My teaching methods and strategies include presenting real musical examples or familiar songs before defining theoretical rules or scale intervals, combining aural, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic activities to help students connect with abstract notation and using digital audio workstations (DAWs) like GarageBand or Soundtrap to encourage composition and modern engagement.

For instruction on clarinet and saxophone, each session will consist of long tones, chromatic scale, all major and minor (melodic) scales, etude and literature. Technical studies, such as finger and embouchure exercises will also be added over time.

For instruction in musical composition, the student will meet with me regularly for lab sessions as well as discussion for the progress on the project. Such sessions will consist of small homework-like assignments to be turned in the following week, if not sooner.

The end result will be a musical composition to be performed publicly. The composition can be in any style. A musical work in the Western Classical tradition with possible integration of American popular musical genres is strongly encouraged.
The final composition should be accessible to performers within the student's personal circle.

Students are at the center of everything I do, so I work to understand their individual needs and backgrounds as I develop effective curricula that is relatable, diverse and culturally responsive.

What sets me apart as a tutor is the wealth of experience that I bring in, coupled with my patience and understanding in working with individuals. My primary experiences is with college students; however, I am willing to work with students at all levels. I want to instill in all people an awareness of music's important role in the enrichment of the human spirit through composition.
