  • 1.Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native Chinese speaker born in Anhui, a region steeped in cultural heritage. From a young age, I was drawn to classical Chinese prose and traditions. Almost every Chinese teacher I’ve had left a deep impression on me, and I was often praised in class for my engagement and performance. As an old Chinese saying goes, “腹有诗书气自华” – meaning “poetry and literature within cultivate elegance without.” To me, Chinese is not just a language; it shapes one’s demeanor from inside out, and it has long been a fundamental source of my confidence and accomplishment.
  • 2.Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I would choose Confucius (孔子) as a historical figure who embodies Chinese language and culture. Beyond his philosophical influence, his teachings and the language of The Analectshave profoundly shaped how Chinese is structured and used.
Key concepts like ren(仁, benevolence) and li(礼, propriety) are not just ideas—they are embedded in the language itself, guiding expressions of respect and social harmony. His educational principles, such as “有教无类” (education for all) and “因材施教” (teaching according to aptitude), continue to influence how Chinese is taught and learned, emphasizing that language education should be inclusive and adaptive.
In my teaching, I draw on Confucian thought to help students understand not only grammar and vocabulary, but also the cultural logic behind polite speech, contextual phrasing, and classical references that remain alive in modern Chinese. In this sense, Confucius represents a living thread connecting language, education, and cultural values, a foundation that makes Chinese both a means of communication and a vessel of enduring wisdom.
  • 3.Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I deeply cherish the concept of “缘分 (yuánfèn).” It describes a serendipitous connection between people, one that feels both inevitable and destined.
In my years of teaching, I’ve encountered students from all over the world—each bringing their own perspectives, languages, and cultures. These encounters have continually reshaped how I see the world, and some students have even become friends. I often reflect that, had I taken a different path at any point, I might never have met them. That, to me, is the essence of yuanfen: an unspoken bond that brings people together across distances and differences, reminding us that certain meetings are quietly written into the story of our lives.
This belief also influences how I teach. I see each student not just as a learner, but as someone with whom I share a slice of this meaningful connection, making the process of teaching Chinese not only educational, but also deeply human.
  • 4.Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It matters not only because it is my mother tongue, the language in which I dream, reflect, and feel most deeply, but also because it carries within it a living memory, a river of history, poetry, philosophy, and human sensibility that has flowed for millennia. When I speak Chinese, I am not just using words; I am invoking a way of seeing that values harmony, honors subtlety, and finds beauty in balance.
As a teacher, speaking Chinese matters even more. It allows me to build bridges between character and meaning, between past and present, between my students’ worlds and a culture that might otherwise feel distant.
In the end, Chinese is more than my language; it is my lens, my voice, and my way of connecting to myself, to others, and to the quiet, enduring wisdom of a civilization that continues to speak through it.
  • 5.What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The biggest challenges for learners typically lie in mastering tones and characters. Here is how I guide my students through them:
For tones – many learners benefit from consciously prolonging the pronunciation when practicing, which helps in noticing and controlling pitch shifts. Patience and daily repetition are far more effective than rushed practice.
For characters – rather than rote memorization, I emphasize understanding the logic behind them. By learning the basic construction principles of Chinese characters, such as pictographic origins, semantic-phonetic compounds, and component combinations, students can see characters as meaningful patterns rather than random strokes. This structural awareness makes recognizing and writing characters much more intuitive.
A gentle reminder on mindset – Chinese belongs to a different language system, which can initially feel unfamiliar and even daunting. This is completely natural. Just as native Chinese speakers face considerable challenges when learning English or other alphabetic languages, the “newness” itself is part of the journey. I encourage students to acknowledge this initial barrier kindly, stay consistent, and celebrate small progress the sense of difficulty often fades as familiarity grows.
In short: systematic practice for tones, logical learning for characters, and a compassionate, persistent mindset will turn these hurdles into milestones.
  • 6.Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

During a university internship, I tutored a student from Malaysia in Chinese. One day, he proudly showed me a panda plush and said, “我有一个胸毛 (xiōng máo)!” — intending to say “熊猫 (xióng māo, panda),” but mispronouncing the tones.
Instead of immediately correcting him, I gently asked, “A ‘chest hair’ plush? What’s it like?” He described the black-and-white bear innocently, and we both laughed when he realized the mix-up. That moment became a lighthearted lesson in how tones shape meaning.
It taught me that patience, humor, and empathy can turn a simple pronunciation error into a memorable step forward — not just in language, but in building a trusting learning connection.
  • 7.How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

My time working as a Chinese teacher in the United Kingdom unexpectedly deepened my own understanding of Mandarin, especially through my students' fascination with Chinese measure words . While I had always used them naturally, it was their curiosity that made me truly see their logic and beauty.
Students would ask questions like: “Why is it ‘一本书’ for a book but ‘一张纸’ for paper? Is it because books are thick and paper thin?” or “What makes a ‘一只猫’ different from ‘一头牛’?” Their inquiries—often playful, always thoughtful—pushed me to trace the historical, cultural, and cognitive roots of measure word usage. I began to realize that these words aren’t arbitrary: they classify the world by shape, function, and cultural perception, turning language into a window onto how Chinese speakers relate to objects and living things.
That experience taught me that teaching a language abroad is also relearning it. Through their eyes, I rediscovered the elegance hidden in everyday grammar, and returned not only as a more reflective speaker, but as a teacher who builds bridges of curiosity—one measure word at a time.
  • 8.What makes you a Superprof in language?

I believe what makes me a Superprof is the ability to teach Chinese not just as a subject, but as a living culture and to do it with empathy, clarity, and a touch of humor.
My approach is built on cultural bridging. I help students see not only howto say something, but whyit’s said that way—whether explaining the logic behind measure words, the stories within characters, or the social nuance behind a polite phrase.
I also teach with patience and perspective. Having taught learners from different language backgrounds, I understand the real hurdles they face.
In the end, I don’t just teach Chinese. I guide students into a new way of seeing, listening, and expressing, and I do it with the belief that every learner brings a unique voice to the language. That’s what makes the journey meaningful, for them and for me.
