About Tanner

I was born in Taipei, Taiwan and grew up speaking Mandarin Chinese. I eventually moved to the United States and lived in Salt Lake City, Utah. Now, I am a student at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Outside of the classroom, I work as a videographer for Chinese speaking communities in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Portland. I'm excited to bring Chinese to interested learners and to spread this beautiful language to more people!

About the lesson

Structured lesson plan modified to best fit student needs, with time each lesson dedicated to speaking practice, learning new vocabulary, writing and reading practice, and listening comprehension.

I tend to emphasize historical context and cultural understanding to explain important concepts like why certain Chinese characters look the way they do, what kinds of misunderstandings do you need to look out for when interacting with Chinese speakers, and the differences in regional accents.

Students will follow the coursework for Integrated Chinese by Cheng & Tsui so they can assimilate into classroom study if they are interested in advanced coursework, but flexible lesson plans are available for intermediate and advanced learners.

Lessons are meant for students starting from the beginner level to upper intermediate Chinese and introductory advanced readings.

I also speak some Japanese and basic Spanish, and can use them to support your learning where applicable.
