About Colette

I am a graduate of the University of Cambridge, where I gained my degree in Chinese studies. I studied and lived in China for several years, where I taught English as a foreign language, and helped many students with their applications for UK universities, and UK job applications.

University/Oxbridge entrance:
Having been to a state school in the UK, I know that the Oxbridge application process in particular can be quite confusing, and without the right guidance it can be difficult to know what they want from an applicant.
I'm passionate about improving access to these institutions and love to help guide students to realise their potential. I really enjoy learning about why my students are applying to their subject, and helping them to get that across to admissions tutors gives me great pleasure.

I also love seeing my students gain professional success, and helping people to get the job they want is always my goal. Even if someone's not successful, I have had students gain a lot of worthwhile experience and understanding of how they can use that experience to improve.

About the lesson

I take a student-focused, tailored approach and always work to understand what a student wants to get out of their sessions.

University/Oxbridge applications and interview preparation:
I encourage my students to think deeply about their reasons for applying to their course and help guide them to make sure their application stands out. I can help with shaping a personal statement and make sure you are making the best use of your wordcount. I can help proofread, check grammar, and make suggestions for improvements. This is the first impression you give a tutor so you have to make it count!

If you're applying to Oxbridge and are successful in being invited to an interview, I can conduct mock interviews, so you can get an idea of what to expect while I demystify the whole process. I can help prepare you for what kinds of questions you might be asked; tips and tricks to think on your feet and give convincing answers; how to get across your passion for your subject; what questions you should ask the tutor.

CV/job application guidance:
I love to help people find success and get the fulfilling new job they're after. I help my students to curate their CV to target exactly what a job description is looking for, and help guide them through writing an effective covering letter or personal statement. If you're successful in gaining an interview I can help with preparations: how to prepare and do your research; how to think on your feet and give convincing responses; what questions you should ask the interviewer. I'm particularly experienced in helping non-native English speakers gain confidence in this area.

I have worked with many students from UK and international backgrounds to help them apply to UK universities and companies. I speak advanced Chinese, Spanish and intermediate French so can also use these languages to explain ideas to my students as well.
