About Kenneth
I am Tutor Ken, a Gatehouse Awards 300-hour TEFL Diploma Certified English Teacher with 40 years business experience in commerce and mining and professional and university qualifications in Accounting and Law and a keen sense of humour with a love of sport.
Teaching runs in our family, with my grandparents, cousins, sisters, wife, father-in-law and daughter all being teachers, which is one of the reasons, in addition to the enjoyment of meeting a diverse group of people and helping people to realise their ambitions, that I have felt drawn to this profession.
I offer tuition in conversational as well as formal Business English and have enjoyed over 2 years of online teaching experience at various levels in different countries.
As each student will have different challenges, I prefer to begin with a needs assessment, which can shed light on any areas requiring special attention.
Although I had a strict native English upbringing in British pronunciation and grammar and studied Latin, I firmly believe that real life activities, having fun and laughing are important ingredients in teaching.
I easily relate to students of all ages and backgrounds, being from a large and closely-knit family.
I have 40 years business experience in commerce and mining, with high profile companies and enjoy playing squash, lawn bowls and watching rugby, cricket and tennis and listening to music.

I use a generally eclectic approach, which in this case is an appropriate combination of the following, tailored for each student as based on the results of that individual's needs analysis. The methods I combine in varying proportions are the modern methods of:
1. Direct student-centered, using speaking / conversation instead of grammar and also known as the Natural approach, where grammar and spelling corrections are made in real time.
2. Communicative language teaching (CLT), which emphasizes the student’s ability to communicate in real-life contexts, such as making requests, accepting offers, explaining things, and expressing their feelings and preferences.
3. Task-/project-/inquiry-based learning, wherein by asking questions and solving problems, with the teacher being just a learning facilitator, student motivation and participation in tasks and projects are likely to increase.
4. Total Physical Response (TPR), which includes miming, gesturing or acting out the language or the meaning of words and which is particularly appropriate both for teaching young learners and for teaching online.
