About Josh

Hello! My name is Josh - a 21-year-old trumpet player originally from Tasmania, and moved to Victoria. I have been playing trumpet for 12 years and have played around Australia with many bands and ensembles, namely the Australian National Jazz Orchestra Youth Big Band with Wayne Bergeron and Gordon Goodwin, Dancing in the Shadows of Motown, and the Australian Session Orchestra to name a few. While I am mainly a jazz player, I am experienced in many styles, from classical and brass band, to big band and funk band music. I have been fortunate enough to work with and have trumpet lessons from Louis Dowdeswell (UK), Scott Tinkler, Eugene Ball, and Yoram Levy. I have also performed with many artists including Gordon Goodwin, Wayne Bergeron, Vangie Gunn, James Morrison, Kristin Berardi, and John Hoffman. I completed my Bachelor of Music in 2024 and am now studying a Master of Teaching, set to be completed in 2026. I have taught both group lessons and one-on-one at schools, along with various music programs and have taught privately for 4 years. I would love to be able to share my knowledge of music and work with you.

About the lesson

As a trumpet tutor with over 12 years of playing experience and 4 years of teaching, I offer engaging, student-centered lessons designed to build both technical skill and musical confidence. I hold a Bachelor of Music (2024) and am currently studying a Master of Teaching, which has deepened my understanding of pedagogy and inclusive practice. My lessons run for 60 minutes and are designed for students of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to advanced players. I tailor each session to individual learning needs, with a strong focus on jazz technique, tone, range, improvisation, and musicality. While rooted in jazz, my teaching also incorporates a strong emphasis on stylistic understanding across genres such as classical, and contemporary music. I also cover essential elements of music theory and aural training to develop well-rounded, expressive players. I use a scaffolded approach that incorporates aural and music theory training, technical exercises, and repertoire to support student progress. I also encourage goal-setting and regular reflection to foster motivation and confidence. Whether teaching one-on-one or in a group setting, I strive to create a positive and structured learning environment that supports all learners.
