About Isla
I am an Architecture tutor with 7 years of experience and a Master of Architecture with a technical specialism in building systems and construction technology. I have worked with over 210 students across undergraduate and postgraduate architectural education. My technical architectural training means I bring genuine expertise to the structural, material, and environmental aspects of architecture that many design-focused tutors address only superficially. I believe strongly that the best architectural design is always technically informed and that the development of technical knowledge and design skill should happen in parallel rather than sequentially. My Architecture teaching specifically develops the technical dimension of architectural skill that many design-focused architecture programs underemphasize — the structural logic, material properties, and construction methods that determine whether a design is actually buildable. I teach structural principles — how buildings stand up, how loads travel through structural systems, why certain structural forms are efficient and others are not — through the analysis of real structures, from simple post-and-beam systems through to complex contemporary structural engineering, because students who understand structural logic make better design decisions and communicate more effectively with engineers. Material properties — the thermal, acoustic, structural, and aesthetic characteristics of common building materials — are addressed systematically because material selection is one of the most significant and most underanalyzed design decisions architects make, and students who understand material properties make more coherent and more honest material choices. CAD software skills are developed for the specific types of technical drawing — plans, sections, elevations, details — that professional architectural practice produces, with attention to drawing standards, conventions, and the communication of construction information. Environmental design — passive solar gain, natural ventilation, daylight distribution, and acoustic performance — is integrated into my technical teaching because these performance considerations should shape design decisions from the earliest stages rather than being addressed as separate technical overlays. Construction technology — the specific methods by which building elements are assembled in contemporary practice — is studied through real building examples and construction details because technical understanding that is abstract and disconnected from actual building is of limited practical value. My teaching goal is an architecture student whose technical knowledge genuinely informs and enriches their design thinking.
