About James
I'm a student who has just finished state education and has gone on to university, having only recently passed through 'the system' I know its foibles well. On and off I have been teaching for a number of years and come from a English Literature teaching background. At my senior school I tutored fellow students after school and at college helped set up a French society for those looking to learn more about the literature and cultures of the Francophone world. English Literature however was my first love and I always try to get my students to understand and fall in love with the texts they're given to study.

With English Literature I go from the basics upwards: I want students to understand not just how to write essays or answer exams, but why we write essays the way we do? Why they're asked to analyse everything? Who were all these mysterious, deep writers? Why do we tell stories? I also try to imbue my own love of literature into my students and to show them that it isn't all Shakespeare, soppy sonnets and tights! I can also take a very direct approach and will ask students to perform a mixture of short tasks with me during the lessons, discussing and analysing both their own texts but also short poems or stories I set for them. If they are working for an exam we will work directly with exam board specifications to decode what is required of them, to hone essay writing skills.
