About Malia
Hi! My name is Malia Olsen, and I am a dedicated future educator currently studying at Florida State University. I am passionate about helping students build their confidence and develop a love for learning. With experience teaching elementary through high school math and tutoring English Language Learners, I understand the importance of creating engaging, student-centered lessons that meet individual needs. I believe that every student has the potential to succeed with the right support and encouragement. My approach is patient, supportive, and tailored to each student’s unique learning style. Whether it’s mastering grammar, strengthening math skills, or improving reading comprehension, I am committed to making learning both effective and enjoyable. So far, my lessons have focused on engaging and interactive learning experiences tailored to my students' needs. In my second-grade math classroom, I recently completed a unit on fractions, incorporating hands-on activities and visual representations to help students grasp key concepts. I also designed a lesson on identifying lines of symmetry using the 5E instructional model, ensuring students explored, engaged, and reflected on their learning in meaningful ways.
For tutoring, I have worked with a fifth-grade English Language Learner (ELL) from China named Belle, focusing on grammar development. One of my lessons encouraged her to write a fictional letter as a princess trapped in a tower, helping her practice sentence structure, descriptive language, and storytelling while making learning enjoyable and creative.
Moving forward, I plan to continue using student-centered strategies to support my tutoring students. I will incorporate visuals, real-life examples, and interactive activities to reinforce grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills. Additionally, I will provide scaffolded support to ensure students feel confident and motivated to express themselves in English. My goal is to create a supportive, engaging environment where students can develop both their language proficiency and overall academic confidence.
