About Ray

Hi, I’m Ray, a software engineer based in Athlone. I have 10 years of professional experience as a Java backend developer, building large-scale systems for retail and on-demand service platforms. My work focused on payment integration, high-concurrency transaction processing and system reliability, the kind of software that has to work correctly for millions of users every day.

I recently completed an MSc in AI Software Design at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), where I deepened my knowledge of artificial intelligence and how it is applied in modern software.

I enjoy teaching because I remember how confusing programming can feel at the beginning. Good guidance makes a huge difference, and I want to give my students the clear, practical explanations I would have loved when I started. I am patient, well organised and committed to helping every student make real progress, whatever their starting point.

About the lesson

My lessons are practical and hands-on. Instead of just going through theory, we write real code together from the very first session. I explain each concept with clear examples, then you apply it straight away through small exercises and, as you progress, real-world projects such as building a simple web application or designing a database.

Beyond the core languages, we can also explore AI-related technologies, such as integrating large language models into applications, working with AI APIs, prompt engineering, and the basics of machine learning with Python. This is ideal if you want to understand how AI is used in real software today.

Every lesson is tailored to your goals. Whether you are preparing for college exams, working on an assignment, getting ready for a technical interview, or learning to code from scratch, I adjust the pace and content to suit you.

Lessons usually last 60 minutes, with 90-minute sessions available for project work. They can take place online or in person in Athlone.

I am a senior backend engineer with 10 years of professional experience in Java, specialising in distributed systems and payment platforms, and I recently completed an MSc in AI Software Design at TUS. I bring real industry practice into every lesson, so you learn not only how to write code, but how professionals actually build software.

Lessons are suitable for complete beginners, secondary school and university students, and adults changing careers into tech. Subjects: Java, Python, SQL, general programming fundamentals and applied AI.
