About Ana
I'm a second-year student in English Language and Literature at Oxford University. My route here was unconventional: I took a year out after school to work, studied Equine Performance for a year at Hartpury University, worked for another year and then started my degree. This pathway meant that I undertook the Oxford admissions process largely without guidance, so I have a very firm understanding of how it all works and how daunting it can be. With experience in two very different fields and Universities, I also have a broad understanding of the University system, and am happy to help answer any questions you may have around admissions.
In terms of English literature specifically, I studied Frankenstein, The Handmaid's Tale, love poetry, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Othello at A Level. At GCSE, I studied Pride and Prejudice, Romeo and Juliet, An Inspector Calls, and other texts. However, I am happy to familiarise myself with any other GCSE or A-Level texts you may be studying.
My current interests are very broad, and my degree covers literature from 650AD to present, including Old and Middle English, Chaucer, the Renaissance, Shakespeare, the Restoration, Regency, Victorians, and Modernist and Contemporary Literature. My dissertation will focus on how modernist and contemporary Irish literature uses ocean imagery to examine themes of nationalism, estrangement, and migration.
For a long time I had no interest in pursuing English Literature at the university level, so I'm sympathetic towards those who don't have a love of the subject. My interest stemmed from exploring literature in my own time, away from the school environment, and I hope that through sympathetic teaching I can help others find their own interests too!

I have tutored in the past for MeetMyTutors, a Chinese tutoring firm, and privately for friends and using online platforms. Whilst I have tutored in Geography, Biology, English as a Foreign Language, and English Literature, I am now focusing on English Language and Literature, as this is the subject of my degree. I'm happy to tutor up to A-Level. Having worked with young children in the past teaching horse-riding I am comfortable with this age group. However, I have generally tutored GCSE and A Level students. I take a friendly approach, hoping to encourage my students to find a love of literature. I'm happy to adapt my teaching to suit your needs, whether that's discussing homework, helping to plan and write practice essays, UK University admissions, or providing practice exercises and close-reading activities to increase general skills. Lessons can be any length that suits you, but I'd usually spend an hour one-on-one with my students.
