• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  In high school, I had taken interest in a lot of the business electives and was fairly good with numbers. I looked up to my business teacher because I thought she was very smart, and she helped guide me toward a career in business. I eventually landed on accounting once I was in college. I tutor outside of my job in public accounting because I enjoy being able to help students understand new concepts within their coursework. As I graduated not that long ago, I know accounting can be a tricky subject to master. I want to give students the opportunity to ask questions in a more relaxed environment than their classroom.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  I most frequently tutor introduction to accounting courses. I like to show my students lots of examples and sprinkle insight on how I've seen accounting principles applied within my career. I've found that these concepts can be easier to learn when thinking about how they're applied in the real world opposed to reading a page in a textbook.

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  Throughout my academic career, I was inspired by a few of my teachers and professors. I admired how they cared about me and other students, as well as taking the time to ensure we all thoroughly learned the material.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  I make a good tutor because I am patient, kind, and personable. I do my best to work with my students schedules and learning styles so that they can get the most out of their sessions.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  Back in school, I remember struggling with accounting concepts like balance sheets and ledgers. One day, my teacher used the example of a lemonade stand-income from sales, costs for lemons, and how everything needed to balance. That simple analogy clicked, and suddenly, all the pieces fell into place. It was a "lightbulb" moment for me, and I realized how accounting was just a way to tell a story about money.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  The biggest challenge I faced within my career was passing the CPA exam. I studied and took my tests over the period of a year, and it took hard work and determination on my end to see it through. I think throughout the exam and licensing process, I developed a deep understanding of the concepts as well as better time management / study habits.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  I find teaching rewarding because it gives me the opportunity to make a difference through sharing knowledge and empowering others to reach their potential.
