About Jimmy

As a Registered Architect, I believe design and CAD are inseparable. My teaching combines architectural design with practical workflows used in professional practice.

Rather than focusing solely on CAD software, I help students or professionals develop their design ideas using Rhino, Grasshopper, and Revit.

My goal is to build technical skill with some design rigor to deliver good project outcomes.

  • Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?

This is during my high school 15 years ago! I could only remember my first time using a computer was when I set up my very first email for MSN messenger. Back then the computer I had wasn't the best during its time, and I always had issues of crashing and giving up on me. Glad I had to struggling back then to appreciate what technology has granted for us today!
  • What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

Assuming in this field of tutoring / mentorship, the technology evolution here is of course… virtual meeting and remote sharing. Most of my students on Superprof are taught virtually and I wouldn't be able to have classes without either zoom, or teams meeting.
On the other hand, my field of architecture - the technological pivoting point would be the "computer aided drawing", in other words CAD. This means that drawings would be generated "using" a computer and 3D visualization opens up to new design thinking.
  • Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.

My expertise applies to architecture, the design and planning of buildings. My interest in this field probably stems from my experience growing up in a development country, as I have witnessed many aspects of my teenage life is affected by architecture. Lots of new roads, houses, shopping malls and towers was built growing up and I have always wondered… what would be like to design something and see it built that can last for many years to come?

Talking about the computer world, architecture is inseparable from the computer world. In simple words, the computer world is essential to the work we do, but the architecture allows us as human beings to be organised and performed accordingly. Taking my office I am working at as an example, every desk is equipped with a computer and is spread along a long table, to allow for micro team structure to work in.
  • Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?

The above names mentioned do inspire me. Apart from billionaires, I think that anyone who is committed to their game and gain success from it can also be my role model. Sometimes I am just inspired by people who have committed their entire life doing the things that they like, because there also people who goes into their grave regretting not doing what they wanted.
  • What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?

I would first say "Yes I totally agree with you, that's why I only use IT in the simplest way". When I teach students, I always encourage them to applies simple logic and common sense, and not over engineering their work.
  • What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?

My other passion is Badminton, I used to play competitively in Malaysia for fun. Badminton is what keeps me active and is one of the things that I look forward to every week!
