About Jake

I’m a qualified primary school teacher with a varied background and a real passion for helping children reach their potential.

Before becoming a teacher, I spent four years serving in the Royal Navy, where I developed strong skills in communication, teamwork, discipline and working effectively under pressure. After leaving the Navy, I spent a year living and working in Australia and travelled extensively through South East Asia and Central America. These experiences have given me a broad perspective on the world and helped me develop confidence, resilience and an ability to connect with people from all different backgrounds. Those life skills I have gained are paramount when teaching the future generation.

I chose teaching because I strongly believe that every child has the right to a high-quality education and the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their starting point or individual circumstances. I believe education should build not only academic ability, but also confidence, independence, curiosity and a belief in what children are capable of achieving.

As a teacher, I aim to create a positive and supportive environment where children feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and challenging themselves. My goal through tutoring is to understand each child as an individual, identify where they need support and help them become more confident and independent learners.

About the lesson

My lessons are primarily focused on primary school maths, helping children build confidence, strengthen their understanding and develop the skills they need to succeed in the classroom. I tailor each lesson to the individual child, whether they need support with a particular area of maths, want to consolidate what they are learning at school, or are looking to be challenged further.

I can also provide 11+ preparation, supporting children with the key mathematical skills and problem-solving techniques required for the entrance exams. This can include areas such as arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, reasoning, word problems, mental maths and working efficiently under time pressure.

Lessons are relaxed, engaging and structured around the child’s needs. I aim to make maths feel less intimidating by breaking challenging concepts down into manageable steps, while encouraging children to explain their thinking and become more independent learners.
