About Gavin

I chose to teach because I believe mathematics is not just about passing exams — it’s about developing logical thinking, problem-solving skills, and confidence that students can carry into every area of life. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student move from feeling uncertain to feeling capable and proud of their progress. My goal is to inspire confidence, provide structured support, and ensure every student feels prepared and motivated. Whether a student is aiming for top grades or simply wants to build a stronger foundation, I bring patience, professionalism, and a genuine passion for helping them succeed.

About the lesson

I believe that effective maths tutoring is about more than just covering the syllabus — it’s about building confidence, encouraging curiosity, and helping students develop problem-solving skills they can apply beyond the classroom. I break down complex topics into clear, manageable steps, using examples and visual aids to make concepts more accessible. I place strong emphasis on exam technique, showing students how to structure their answers to gain maximum marks. Lessons are interactive, with plenty of practice questions, past papers, and targeted feedback. I tailor each session to the student’s learning style, whether they need reinforcement of core skills or extension work to push towards top grades. Lessons are normally 45-60 minutes, though I also offer 90-minute sessions for students preparing for exams or needing more intensive support. I am a Qualified Teacher, with 10+ years of experience as a Head of Maths, with extensive experience teaching and tutoring GCSE and A-Level Mathematics. I have taught across multiple exam boards (Edexcel, AQA, OCR, Eduqas) and also have 15+ years of examiner experience, giving me valuable insight into how marks are awarded and what examiners look for. I tutor students aged 13–18, covering KS3, GCSE (Foundation and Higher Tier) and A-Level Mathematics. I also support resit students and those aiming to boost confidence in specific topics within number, algebra, geometry, or statistics.
