About Jake

Hello! I’m Jake, a professional music producer, audio engineer, DJ, and performing artist with a degree in Music Technology and Sound Engineering from the University of Michigan.
I release music as one half of the electronic duo HLWA and as a solo artist under the name Wally. My work has received more than 3 million streams and has been placed in films and commercial campaigns. I also create educational music-production content for an audience of more than 13,000 people.
I know how overwhelming music production and DJing can feel at first, especially when there are so many tools, techniques, and opinions to navigate. My goal is to make the process clear, practical, and enjoyable while helping each student build real confidence and independence.
I care deeply about meeting students where they are. Whether you are opening a DAW for the first time, trying to finish stronger songs, or preparing to DJ in front of an audience, I will approach your goals with patience, honesty, and genuine enthusiasm for helping you improve.

These lessons are built around you: your goals, your taste, your current skill level, and the music you are inspired to make. My role is to give you the tools, understanding, and confidence you need to keep making progress independently.
In-person lessons take place in my Santa Monica studio, which includes a full music-production workspace and professional DJ setup, so students can learn hands-on with real equipment.
We can work on Ableton Live, Logic Pro, songwriting, arrangement, recording, vocal production, sound design, mixing, or DJing.
A typical lesson starts with a quick check-in on what you are working on and where you feel stuck. From there, we can work directly inside your project or build something new together. I explain not only what to do, but why it works, so you can apply the same ideas independently in future sessions.
For DJ students, lessons can cover Rekordbox, Serato, track selection, beatmatching, phrasing, transitions, EQ, effects, set preparation, and developing your own style. For production students, the focus can range from learning the fundamentals to finishing stronger, more polished songs.
I work best with beginners and intermediate students who want a clear, encouraging, and personalized approach. Music takes patience and effort, but enjoying the process is a priority. My goal is for every lesson to feel useful, creative, and fun while helping you make tangible progress.
