About Heather
I'm Canadian-born, London-based, have been playing the clarinet for thirty years and have always loved it. I'm a real clarinet nerd, and love sharing my knowledge and experience with students of all ages! Aside from my teaching work, I'm also regularly found on various concert stages across Europe, performing as a soloist, in chamber music formations, as well as in film recording sessions and with bands. I love contemporary music and improvisation and all kinds of experimentation - and I bring this curious attitude to my teaching practice too! I really enjoy teaching online - I find there are more tools we can use to help you reflect on your progress and it's easy for me to share resources with you that are going to help you take your skills up a level. My hobbies include running, reading novels, and spending time with my cat, Vera (who hates the clarinet quite passionately, unfortunately!).

As a passionate and experienced clarinettist, I am dedicated to helping students develop both their technical skills and musicality, guiding them to reach their full potential on the instrument. With years of performing and teaching experience, I bring a thoughtful, personalised approach to every lesson. Whether you're a beginner looking to build a strong foundation or an advanced player aiming to refine your technique and artistry, I tailor my teaching to your specific goals. My teaching emphasises: * Sound Production & Technique – Focusing on tone, embouchure, and finger technique to ensure a solid technical foundation. * Musical Expression & Interpretation – Helping students develop their unique musical voice and express themselves with confidence. * Preparation for Performances & Exams – Providing guidance for auditions, competitions, and graded exams to help you succeed. I believe in creating a positive, supportive environment where every student feels motivated and inspired to progress. Clarinet playing should be both enjoyable and rewarding, and I’m here to ensure you get the most out of your musical journey! My teaching experience * Currently I am the Clarinet Lead at tonebase, where I lead monthly Livestreams, Zoom group lessons and organise short intensive courses for our large group of adult amateur clarinettists on different clarinet topics (for example a recent intensive was on improving the speed of your articulation). * I am also one of the clarinet tutors at Goldsmith's University of London, where I teach both undergraduate and postgraduate students * I give regular masterclasses at institutions including the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Academy of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire. * I teach at festivals including the Clarimondo festival in Germany and the Darmstadt Summer course If you're ready to take your playing to the next level, I would love to work with you!
