About Amir Yahya

I received my Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Vechta, under the advice of Professor Peter Nitschke who is renowned for his proficiency in political philosophy. My second supervisor was Professor Meir Litvak from Tel Aviv University who is acclaimed for his expertise on Iranian Studies and political Shiism. My doctoral research, which was honored with Magna cum laude, is centered on the Political Conservatism and Religious Reformation in Iran in the formative decades leading to the 1979 revolution.
My research interest was formed during the years that I studied Islamic Jurisprudence at the Islamic Seminary in Ghom, Iran. In those years I closely studied Shi'ite jurisprudence, Islamic theology, and Islamic scholastic philosophy from the original sources in Arabic. Living among Talabehs’ gave me a first-hand and invaluable lived experience of the ways in which public and formal teachings of Shi'ism are manifested in the political thoughts of clergies in Iran. I continued my pursuit of philosophy by obtaining a Master’s degree in Western philosophy at the Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, Iran, where for my research I offered a new reading of the concept of tradition and its relation with Revolution and Reform in the political thought of British conservative philosopher, Edmund Burke. As my doctoral thesis, I offered a multidisciplinary analysis of the historical connection of politics and religion in Iran.
During my conscription in Iran, I was the teacher of Islamic ethics for many soldiers and I taught secular ethics under the mentioned title. I also had the experience of teaching at the University of Vechta as a lecturer of Iranian studies. In addition to my doctoral research in Germany, I was the chief researcher in a program about the role of rhetoric in American politics named “The primaries and the 2016 US election campaign: linguistic and political dimensions” at the University of Vechta. My research focus under the main area of Iranian Studies is on the political Shiism, theories on the state, political power, history of clericalism, democratization process, and religious reformation in Iran.

About the lesson

My teaching is based on the different and dynamic methods that will be used during the respective teaching period. That is why I structure the lessons freely, but at the same time determine the direction. This is a combination between dialogical learning, discovery learning, and action orientation.
