About Vanissa

Have been teaching private music lessons for 25 years. Used to lecture at universities in Hong Kong before I moved to the UK. I believe the best way to learn is to bring positivity out of the students. Enjoyable lessons are always most efficient and productive. I believe that the ultimate goal of creative art and music education is to develop self-efficacy - the belief in one’s ability to succeed and to accomplish. Through creating, students acquire the ability to solve practical problems, and to construct new understandings of the world. I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and have relocated to Northern Ireland in June 2021. I possess a PhD from Hong Kong, and have been lecturing on music theory, music technology, composition, and interdisciplinary topics. I am currently a visiting scholar at QUB. Apart from lecturing in unis I have also conducted primary school choirs and orchestras when I was in Hong Kong. I was awarded the Associate Diplomas (ATCL) piano and Licentiate Diploma (LTCL) singing diploma from Trinity College London in 2004 and 2012 respectively, and have been giving private piano and singing lessons for almost 20 years. In summer 2019 I taught a summer camp for 8-10 yo children on creative thinking and music composition. I definitely would like to use my experiences to inspire children in my new neighbourhood.

About the lesson

From score reading to chord-reading accompaniment playing. Improve your finger techniques and style interpretation for music from different periods. Can prepare you for Trinity or ABRSM piano and singing exams. Intensive lessons for learning particular songs/ pieces are also available.

Perfect! Yes patient and understanding even though I was a complete mess my first lesson and could barely identify the notes I was being asked to play haha. Vanissa will write me sheet music for the piece I’ve already learnt so I can foster an understanding. For now I just have to get quicker at identifying notes.

Vanissa taught me music theory in a way that is much more easily comprehensible than what I could do from reading the text books. She taught from the first principle and make sure you know the fundamentals and I think that is extremely important that you build your foundations right and easier to move on to more difficult concepts. She is considerate and patient, and I have no reservations in recommending her as a music theory tutor.
