About Nicolas

After five years working in various government roles as a policy adviser and community engagement specialist, I decided to return to teaching. I believe critical thinking is a skill that is, unfortunately, increasingly absent in today’s world.

In a consumer-driven society where education is commodified and often reduced to a pathway toward employment and higher income, we are losing the ability to truly think and critically assess the world around us. This impoverished view of education has led to a troubling paradox: the most technologically advanced civilisation in history is also the one that has forgotten how to think.

Through my teaching, I am aiming to help you better understand yourself and the world we live in. I also hope to learn a thing or two from you in the process ;)

I published peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals such as the Australian Journal of Political Science and Democratic Theory. Over 130 citations. Link to my publication record on google scholar available upon request.

I also have taught the following courses:

Lecturer:
POLS201 – Middle Eastern Politics at ACU
POLS214 – The Nature of Democracy at ACU
200.315 – Contemporary Political Thought at Massey University

Tutor (list non-exhaustive):
ATS3399 – The politics of identity at Monash University
Politics 109 – Foundations of Western Politics and Law at the University of Auckland
Politics 107 – New Zealand Politics at the University of Auckland
Politics 212 – Media and Conflict at the University of Auckland
Politics 214/314 – Democracy in Theory and Practice at the University of Auckland
Politics 209 – Modern Political Thought at the University of Auckland
French101 – Introductory French 1 at the University of Auckland

About the lesson

My areas of expertise are:

- Political theory/History of political thought (from Plato to Rawls)
- Democracy and multiculturalism
- Indigenous politics
- Middle Eastern politics

I can help you with:

- Reading skills (how to understand complex texts, take notes, and summarise the key ideas from academic articles and books).
- Writing skills (I will NOT write for you but can give you tips on how to make your writing smoother and clearer).
- Logical thinking/reasoning (what is an argument/contention and how to develop it through a logical step-by-step process).

I also do one-on-one conversations on key political ideas following a 12 weeks program.

Perfect! Highly engaging, and allows for fruitful discussions, but not allowing the topic to divulge too far from the main topic, highly educated and is very transparent with what he knows and doesn't as well

Perfect! I am really grateful for the support I received from my tutor, especially when I needed last-minute help. He was always incredibly kind and patient, never making me feel rushed or stressed even when time was tight. What stood out most was how personal his approach was, he took the time to understand exactly what I needed and explained things in a way that made sense to me.

He consistently checked in and asked for feedback, which showed he genuinely cared about improving and making sure his teaching was effective. That level of attention and interest made a big difference in my confidence and understanding.

Overall, he created a supportive and comfortable environment, and I always felt encouraged to ask questions. I really appreciate his dedication and would highly recommend him to anyone needing extra help.
