About Sam

I’ve been tutoring since I was 15, beginning with English at an inner-city afterschool program. I had no idea what I was doing at first, but quickly discovered a passion for helping students learn. Since then, I’ve never stopped tutoring, and my favorite part is always getting to know my students and understanding what motivates them. Many of the learners I work with have lost confidence in themselves, so my goal is to help them rebuild that belief while making learning enjoyable. Teaching—whether in university classrooms or one-on-one tutoring—truly feels like my calling. I love personalizing lessons, not only to students’ learning styles but also their interests; I’ve created algebra problems inspired by Star Wars and essay prompts about Minecraft and Taylor Swift. When students connect with the material, learning becomes much easier. My passion led me to earn a PhD in STEM Education, and I now specialize in supporting neurodivergent students and increasing access to STEM fields. On a personal note, I proudly call myself a nerd who loves Star Wars, Marvel, and reading. I live with my black lab, Bella (who’s seven but forever a puppy in my eyes), and my two cats, Rory and Lupin. Currently, I’m a postdoctoral fellow at Clemson University, where I collaborate with STEM faculty to make classrooms more accessible for disabled students. In my free time, I love traveling and am just starting to get into non-scary escape rooms.

About the lesson

I hold a PhD in Math & Science Education and bring 24 years of teaching and tutoring experience across 4th to 12th grade ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science. I specialize in a variety of test prep, including SAT, ACT, ASVAB, GED/HSE, and state exams such as EOC, Regents, and Keystone. I also provide support with essay writing, proofreading, and have extensive experience homeschooling students, offering personalized resources for families considering homeschooling.

I have a strong background working with learners who have ADHD, autism, anxiety, processing disorders, and other developmental or emotional needs. My approach is evidence-based and highly individualized; I tailor instructional tools and teaching strategies to fit each student’s unique learning style. Over the years, I have successfully helped many students overcome academic and test-related anxiety, particularly those who have struggled in traditional or remote settings.

Currently, I offer remote tutoring via Zoom—which I have done successfully for over a decade with students around the world. I have numerous references attesting to the progress my students have made, especially those who previously faced challenges with online learning or attention issues.
