About Teke

Hi, I'm Teke! I'm an applied mathematician with a PhD from the University of Groningen (Netherlands), plus degrees in electrical engineering from Northwestern University (USA) and Zhejiang University (China). After my PhD, I worked for two years as a postdoctoral researcher at University College London, using maths to model and improve real engineering systems.

Why I teach: during my PhD I led university tutorials, both online and in person, and they were some of the most rewarding parts of my work. I loved the moment when a student who had been stuck suddenly saw how everything fits together. I know how it feels to find maths difficult at first, and I believe almost anyone can understand it when it's explained clearly, one step at a time.

Studying and working in three countries has taught me that every student learns differently. I'll adapt to your pace, your course and your goals, whether that's passing an exam, getting through a tough university module, or simply feeling confident with maths again.

I speak fluent English and Mandarin. I'm looking forward to working with you!

My approach: understanding first, then practice.

Many students can follow a worked example but get stuck as soon as the question changes. My goal is to help you understand why a method works, so you can handle any question the exam throws at you.

How a lesson works:
- We start with you. In the first lesson, I find out what you're studying, where you feel stuck, and what you're aiming for (an exam, coursework, or just confidence).
- Step by step. I break difficult topics into small, clear steps and link them to examples, pictures and real-world applications. As an applied mathematician, I've spent years using maths to model real engineering systems, so I can show you where it's actually used.
- You do the thinking. I ask questions and let you try the problems yourself, then guide you when you're stuck. This is how understanding sticks.
- Exam technique. For A-level students, we practise with past papers and learn how marks are awarded.

Levels: A-level Maths, Further Maths, Statistics and Physics; university maths (calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, numerical methods), statistics, MATLAB and electrical engineering.

I've taught university tutorials both online and in person, and I'm patient, clear and happy to go at your pace.
