About Carl

Hi, my name is Carl and I’m a Civil Engineering student at Swinburne University with a deep passion for chess! I’ve been playing for more than 15 years and coaching for the past 10 years both individually and in groups of up to 25 students. I’ve played in many tournaments myself and I'm proud to be ranked in the top 2,000 players in Australia according to FIDE ratings. Throughout my experience, I’ve taught chess in dozens of schools all across Melbourne, and have also worked as an arbiter in many tournaments, overseeing games and ensuring fair play. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, I’m here to help you improve and enjoy the game of chess!

About the lesson

I believe that every student learns differently, which is why I tailor my teaching approach to each individual. I encourage students to share how they learn best, so I can adapt my lessons to suit their needs. I cover all aspects of the game, including opening repertoire, mid-game tactics, and endgame scenarios, ensuring a well-rounded and engaging learning experience. Generally, I like to introduce a topic through discussion, then provide real game examples to help illustrate key concepts. From there, I challenge students with puzzles and exercises to test their understanding and apply what they've learned. I also offer game analysis which is crucial in pinpointing your strengths and weaknesses, helping you learn from your mistakes.

Even though Carl is able to work independently, he is great at identifying when he needs support.
