About Joseph

Teaching has always been my passion; music is how I share that love with the world.

I received my undergraduate degree in Cello from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, studying with Leslie Frittelli; and master's degree in Violoncello from the oldest conservatory in the world, il Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella, Napoli, Italy, studying with Luca Signorini, principal cellist of Teatro San Carlo.

I have helped students prepare for orchestra auditions, performances, and college auditions including James Madison University, West Virginia University, and George Mason University, leading them to $20,000 in scholarships per year.

Find out more about Joseph

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

The moment when I knew I would be playing music for the rest of my life was during an orchestra rehearsal in 9th grade. The cellos and basses played a low D together and I could feel the stage below my feet, my chair, and my instrument all vibrating together, and in that moment I knew I was connected to something far bigger and greater than myself.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

One composer I could listen to without ever tiring of his music is Bela Bartok, his string quartets or Concerto for Orchestra, in particular. Rhythmic, driving, gorgeous and unusual harmonies, and always some new layer to discover. Bach and Beethoven would be very close behind.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I train myself to play the most advanced and difficult things through the basics, namely scales. They are diverse on their own, but then we can alter the rhythm of the order of notes, play them slow and fast, and use a variety of bowings from legato to staccato to sautillé, all of which are demanded in pieces of music and must be isolated first. If you make the basic rigorous, the most challenging pieces aren't as daunting.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Every instrument has it's own challenges and mastery of any of them requires many hours of focused work. Of course I'm partial to thinking about the violin family as the most complicated to learn since stringed instruments are build to be "perfect," so any error in tone, rhythm, intonation, is on the shoulders of the performer and nothing can be blamed on the instrument.
  • What are your keys to success?

My key to success is accurate repetition. Just because you play something 100 times doesn't mean it's accurate, but if you can produce it correctly once, you can produce it correctly 100 times. At some point it becomes muscle memory and you don't need to think about it anymore and can continue the process with another section or piece of music.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I would love to travel back in time and meet Bela Bartok to ask him about how he came up with his own methods of harmonic progressions that are so nontraditional yet flow and make sense in such a natural way when I listen to his music. I'd want to chat with J. S. Bach about his process for writing the Cello Suites that make my instrument come alive in my hands. Finally, I'd want to sit in silence with Dmitri Shotakovich, who put such tragic passion and pain into his music.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

There was one time I was working with a student on a G Major scale while playing a drone pitch (think bagpipes, that always have one note constantly playing to provide harmony) After finishing this and asking the student to play without the drone, he plays three note, then stops and smiles. I say "you can still hear it, can't you?" and that was the beginning of him learning to play in tune. This is the type of lightbulb moment that makes me come alive.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I don't teach any technique or process that I wouldn't do for myself; if I've found success with something, I know I can use it as a tool to help someone else becoming successful too.
