About Anna
I'm Anna Gazmarian, a New York Times-reviewed memoirist and writing tutor with an MFA from Bennington College. My memoir, "Devout: A Memoir of Doubt," has been praised as "a dazzling debut memoir" (Publishers Weekly), "a righteously angry debut, a testimony that will speak to both God-fearing and secular readers" (Oprah Daily), and The New York Times noted that "if readers feel seen by this book and thus saved from the stigma they, like Gazmarian, might have carried like a cross, that's no small accomplishment." I spent six years on the editorial team at The Sun Magazine, a prestigious literary publication, and have extensive experience in both mental healthcare and journalism. Currently, I teach at a local community college and lead writing groups. My wide-ranging interests extend beyond writing—I lead weightlifting workshops and compete in Hyrox. I believe that the way we live informs our writing, and working with me extends beyond the classroom. My experience with neurodiversity and learning differences informs my teaching, enabling me to understand firsthand the transformative impact of the right support. As both a published author and experienced educator, I combine professional writing expertise with genuine empathy for the real challenges students face.

I used to hate English classes and writing - a fact that might surprise students who learn I'm now a New York Times-reviewed memoirist and MFA graduate from Bennington. My journey from reluctant student to passionate writer and tutor taught me that traditional approaches don't work for everyone. Drawing on my own experience navigating college while managing health challenges and neurodivergence, I've developed a tutoring method built on flexibility and genuine understanding. I know what it's like when the "standard" way doesn't click, so I meet each student exactly where they are. My lessons blend close reading, interactive discussion, and personalized writing exercises that connect to what actually matters to you - whether that's analyzing song lyrics, exploring current events, or developing creative projects. We'll work on everything from essay structure to finding your authentic voice, always with patience and detailed feedback that builds your confidence. I specialize in working with college students in writing, literature, and English at all skill levels. Whether you're crafting academic essays or exploring creative writing, my goal is creating a supportive space where you feel understood and empowered to grow as a writer and thinker.
