About Elena

I am a native Italian speaker and moved to Australia with my family eleven years ago from Italy, where I used to support high school students in Italian language and humanities subjects. Since 2015, I have continued to offer Italian tutoring in Australia to a wide range of learners — including young children, high school and university students, as well as retirees — with different levels and motivations.

I hold a degree in Modern Humanities with a focus on Art History, with a curriculum centered around art history, art criticism, philosophy, psychology, dialectology, Italian literary history, theater and Latin. My thesis focused on the history and criticism of cinema, specifically the "white telephone" comedies of the 1930s and 1940s.

I have also obtained various qualifications in the fields of personal development and education, including a Certificate in Gestalt Coaching (Italy), a Postgraduate Certificate in Gestalt Therapy, and a Certificate in Leading Complex Projects from QUT (Queensland University of Technology).

Over the years, I have developed my own approach to language teaching, aimed at guiding people towards self-education and belief in their own potential. I strongly believe that language learning — although notoriously challenging — is accessible to everyone, especially when it integrates multiple cognitive and emotional levels, as it engages different areas of the brain and the self.

I am a creative person with a passion for art, cinema, theatre, and music, and I bring this sensitivity into my teaching style, making the learning process lively, engaging, and meaningful.

To me, learning a language is much more than acquiring linguistic skills: it’s an opportunity to expand one’s inner and cultural horizons, to develop self-awareness and confidence, and to transform the way we relate to both the world and ourselves.

About the lesson

My teaching methods are very interactive and discussion-based. However, when I teach, I first try to understand who I am teaching: their background, their needs, their strengths, and their difficulties with the Italian language.

My lessons range from learning basic grammar to history, culture, biographies of famous Italian figures, and even the origins of the Italian language.

I do this because I believe that learning a language goes beyond simply memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules; to truly learn, one must grasp the deeper cultural, historical, and emotional aspects as well.

Moreover, I believe that the ability to learn is closely tied to our interest and our capacity to become passionate about what we study. Often, what hinders learning is not a real inability but the perception we have of ourselves and our limitations. The more space we give to our potential, the greater the possibility to learn and evolve.

Many mistakenly think that learning is only about memory or logical-critical skills. While these are important, learning is much more than that: it is not just a cognitive process, but one deeply influenced by emotional factors. In fact, we remember better what emotionally involves us, what touches and deeply motivates us.
