About Maya

I grew up in Cologne, in the Rhineland, and German is my mother tongue — including all the everyday expressions and small talk that textbooks tend to leave out.

I've been tutoring for five years now, and for the past two I've also been teaching tutorial groups at the University of Cologne, where I work as a student assistant. Standing in front of a class every week teaches you quickly that no two learners need the same thing: some want to pass an exam, others want to talk to family, order a coffee in Berlin without switching to English, or simply stop feeling nervous when they open their mouth.

My English is at a C1–C2 level, so if you're starting from scratch we can begin entirely in English and move into German step by step, at whatever pace feels right for you.

That confidence part is what I care about most. German has a reputation for being difficult and full of rules, and I think that reputation puts people off far more than the language itself ever does. In my lessons, mistakes are completely normal and never a problem — they're usually the most useful thing that happens all hour.

About the lesson

Hi there! My lessons usually run for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on your schedule and on what you'd like to work on. I'm always happy to adapt the format to your individual needs.

Depending on your level, I like to start with conversation and pronunciation, so you're speaking German from the first minute. From there we work with short texts and exercises, which we then use as a starting point for grammar, vocabulary and writing practice. Every lesson ends with a short summary of what we covered, so you leave with a clear sense of what you've learned and can keep track of your progress over time.

I'm currently in the final semester of my Bachelor's degree in Germany (currently writing my thesis), training to become a secondary school teacher, so my lessons are especially well suited to high school students. That said, I also have years of experience teaching primary school children and am very happy to work with younger learners. University students are just as welcome — as an exchange student myself, I know what it's like to learn a language alongside your studies, and we can meet very much on the same level.
