About Shekhar
I am a native English speaker who lives in Abu Dhabi. From a young age, I read everything I could: newspapers, books, encyclopedias, cereal boxes, my parents' medical journals, and of course my textbooks. I am impressed by anyone who can speak even a little English when it is not their native tongue. My goal in tutoring is to help one student at a time gain confidence in speaking, reading, and writing in English without losing themselves. I tutored an older adult who had not learned to read when she was young. I work with colleagues on how to use certain English phrases in writing and in emails. I take my own language studies to heart when learning other languages (French, Italian, German, Portuguese, and now Arabic).

I worked with adults who were learning to read English. My approach is to work with a student where he or she wants to be. To improve conversation, we will speak slowly or at speed. As I learned German years ago, my teacher paused to gently correct me or make a suggestion. I will happily pause to provide a relevant grammar lesson on present tense or past tense, for example.
To improve reading, I will select age- or skill-appropriate reading passages and go through them with the student. Sometimes authors use unfamiliar words or styles. School assignments or work assignments are perfect to review together.
To improve writing, I am an excellent proofreader and editor. I will work with the student to review his or her writing. Not write for, but write with to help him or her improve and be confident.
For now I work with students of any age who have some English language skills.
30-minute to one-hour sessions.
