About Kelly
As a current college student, I understand the challenges many students face in staying motivated and seeking assistance when needed. I am pursuing a degree in Psychology at the University of South Florida (USF) and have taken Spanish language courses to refine my proficiency. My experience includes tutoring peers in Spanish since high school, drawing on both academic knowledge and my background as a native Spanish speaker. My family immigrated from Colombia before I was born, and I grew up bilingual, often translating between English and Spanish for my parents. This experience motivated me to deepen my understanding of proper Spanish, especially given the linguistic nuances and variations among different Hispanic and Latino countries, which can sometimes pose challenges even for native speakers. Whether you are beginning your language-learning journey out of interest or as a requirement, it is essential to grasp the grammatical complexities and contextual variations that make Spanish such a rich and dynamic language.

I like to take my time explaining each Spanish topic and answering every question a language learner has. The key to learning a language is having the patience to mess up and the diligence to keep working on your speaking skills. Here is a typical lesson plan I would give for those who choose to have me as a tutor. Lesson Plan: Beginner Spanish Objective: Learn basic Spanish greetings, introductions, and vocabulary. Understand simple sentence structure. Part 1: Greetings and Introductions (20 minutes) Vocabulary: Hola - Hello Buenos días - Good morning Buenas tardes - Good afternoon Buenas noches - Good evening/night ¿Cómo estás? - How are you? Estoy bien, gracias. - I’m fine, thank you. ¿Y tú? - And you? Me llamo... - My name is... Mucho gusto - Nice to meet you. Adiós - Goodbye Activity: Practice a dialogue with a partner: A: Hola, ¿cómo estás? B: Estoy bien, gracias. ¿Y tú? A: Bien, gracias. Me llamo [name]. ¿Cómo te llamas? B: Me llamo [name]. Mucho gusto. A: Adiós. Part 2: Numbers and Colors (20 minutes) Numbers 1-10: Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. Colors: Rojo (Red), Azul (Blue), Verde (Green), Amarillo (Yellow), Blanco (White), Negro (Black) Activity: Count objects around the room in Spanish. Match colors with items (e.g., "El libro es rojo" - The book is red). Part 3: Basic Sentence Structure (20 minutes) Key Concepts: Subject + Verb + Object: Example: Yo estudio español. (I study Spanish.) Common verbs: Ser (to be): Yo soy (I am), Tú eres (You are) Tener (to have): Yo tengo (I have), Tú tienes (You have) Hablar (to speak): Yo hablo (I speak), Tú hablas (You speak) Activity: Create simple sentences using vocabulary learned: Example: Yo soy estudiante. (I am a student.) Part 4: Practice and Review (30 minutes) Role Play: Simulate real-life scenarios (e.g., meeting a friend, describing an object).
