About Jo

Firstly, I have a passion for teaching that I recognised through naturally enjoying tutoring lower years in Biology and Chemistry topics during school. This strengthened my scientific drive as I thoroughly appreciated developing resources to help them understand topics they struggled with and perform better on tests as a result. Volunteering as a Mentor for students applying to Medical School from underrepresented backgrounds was incredibly fulfilling; I prepared discussion points, delivered group lesson plans and answered questions. I practised providing important feedback on personal statements and interview techniques specific to students’ abilities, equipping them with skills necessary to excel in university admissions. I also completed Educare safeguarding and Brightside platform training.

Secondly, the Bright Network Public Sector programme helped me understand the difference teachers make in students’ lives. Being a teacher is a privilege - they support students so that they feel reassured and comfortable to share concerns, which is an ability I highly value. It gave me insight into the problem-solving aspects of teaching as I found the speakers’ classroom experiences exciting and engaged in practice scenarios.

I love Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths subjects. My knowledge and understanding of these contributes to my thorough enjoyment of teaching, as I have the opportunity to pass this onto others, using my experience to give additional advice and support.

About the lesson

• Teaching techniques include: introducing content in an organised fluent way, answering questions, helping create revision resources, and testing with questions at the end. Follow up if needed.

• Already have written my own mark-scheme-specific revision resources used in my exams to do well, and will use these as references for teaching topics, and can additionally prepare student-specific lesson plans ahead of time if there is a specific subtopic within a subject module they would like help with and they let me know!

• Suggested revision resource creation techniques, that can be provided support with, include: summaries with small sections in subheadings, diagrams, tables, mindmaps, bullet points, etc. Paired with flashcards (e.g. ANKI or physical cards), answering practice questions, and re-teaching others (can listen and give specific feedback).

• Experience: Tutored younger years in high school. Mentored sixth-form students applying to Medicine at university regarding personal statement and interview techniques. Taught peers regarding medical and biological topics.

• Lessons for GCSE/A-Level Biology and GCSE/A-Level Chemistry. Can also teach GCSE Maths and Physics.

• Lesson length can be altered based on student preference, happy to do any length between 0.5 to 2 hours, and times and breaks are of course open for any discussion.
