About Jonathan

I hold an M.A. from Temple University's MediaXArts: Cinema for New Technologies and Environments program, as well as a bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Film from Franklin & Marshall College. My undergraduate studies gave me a rigorous foundation in understanding human behavior, while my growing passion for the practical power of visual storytelling inspired me to pursue further education in the arts.

That intersection of psychology, storytelling, and creative practice continues to shape my approach to teaching. Through my experience in film and media education, creative writing, and the arts, I enjoy helping students develop technical skills while discovering how their ideas, perspectives, and stories can connect with others. I'm excited to bring this interdisciplinary background to my Superprof lessons, offering personalized instruction that encourages both creative exploration and thoughtful, purposeful work.

I have spent the past eight years teaching at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts, where I have developed a deep appreciation for the creative process and the importance of helping students discover their individual strengths. My experience in both in-person and cyber education has taught me how to adapt my approach to different students, learning styles, and goals.

Beyond the classroom, I remain actively involved in the creative community. I have collaborated on projects across multiple disciplines, helped develop a podcast centered on writing and books, and fostered a local writers' circle in the Philadelphia area. I also continue to work as a freelance artist and pursue my own creative projects in writing, poetry, and visual art.

Maintaining an active creative practice informs the way I teach. I understand that developing as an artist or writer involves more than learning techniques; it requires curiosity, experimentation, persistence, and the willingness to revise, reflect, and try again. I bring that perspective into my lessons, helping students build practical skills while discovering their own creative voices.

I strive to create a welcoming, thoughtful, and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring unfamiliar ideas, and taking creative risks. Whether you are beginning your journey or looking to refine existing skills, I offer professional guidance grounded in years of teaching experience and a genuine, ongoing commitment to the arts. My goal is to help you grow not only in what you can do, but also in how confidently and independently you approach your creative work.

Also, feel free to express what fiction or nonfiction you are currently digesting. I am particularly interested in diving into the worlds you are personally fascinated with. Because I believe artists are most inspired by what is currently fueling their creative wonder!

My teaching approach combines hands-on learning, creative exploration, and individualized instruction to help students develop both their technical abilities and their unique artistic voices. With experience teaching in both cyber and in-person educational environments, including at a performing arts school, I understand how to adapt my instruction to different learning styles, experience levels, and creative goals.

My background spans a diverse range of media arts disciplines, introducing me to an expansive array of writing forms, storytelling techniques, and creative practices. Through my work and education, I've explored the rapidly evolving landscape of digital media, from emerging hardware and software applications to new technologies that continue to reshape how we create, communicate, and tell stories.

This diverse experience allows me to approach creativity from multiple perspectives, helping students understand not only how to create something, but also how to communicate an idea, tell a compelling story, and make meaningful artistic choices.

Whether we are exploring visual storytelling, video production, editing, composition, narrative structure, or the written word, I encourage students to experiment, think critically, and develop their own creative perspective.

Lessons are tailored to each student's needs and interests. A typical session begins with a discussion of the student's goals, followed by an introduction to relevant concepts, practical demonstrations, and guided exercises. Students then apply what they have learned through their own work. We review the results together, identify strengths and opportunities for improvement, and establish clear next steps. My goal is to balance structured instruction with the freedom to explore, take creative risks, and learn through practice.

I believe that learning to write, make films, or produce media is not simply about mastering techniques; it is also about developing the confidence to express ideas, solve problems, and discover one's own voice. My experience in both online and traditional classrooms also allows me to create engaging lessons that work well in different learning environments.

My lessons are designed for beginners, middle and high school students, aspiring filmmakers, emerging writers, and anyone looking to strengthen their creative skills. Whether you want to improve your poetry or creative writing, learn the fundamentals of filmmaking and video production, develop your storytelling abilities, or build confidence in your artistic practice, I will help you develop the skills, knowledge, and creative independence to bring your ideas to life.
