About Ruby
Hi! I'm Ruby. I've been playing piano for 17 years and teaching for 10. I started tutoring when I was in high school, following the methods that my own music teachers used with me. I have had dozens of students of varying ages and have been able to adapt each lesson to the individual to make sure that learning goes smoothly. I combine structured lessons with personalized learning, allowing students to choose which songs they want to learn and how much time they want to devote to technique vs theory practice vs learning songs. I think it's important that students build a strong foundation in musical theory while also getting to explore all the different facets of music and, most importantly, have fun with the piano.

MY APPROACH:
I teach piano and music theory in a way that is fun and digestible, using technique drills, workbook exercises, and improvisation. I like to follow along with the Faber method books for ease of learning and a more classical focus, while also adding my own exercises to the mix and allowing the student to choose their own pathway through music education. I adapt each lesson plan to each student depending on their preferred style of learning. Whether it's improvisation, practicing different scales, focusing on learning favorite songs, or handwritten exercises, I incorporate this into the student's lessons. My teaching philosophy relies on building a strong foundation in musical principles while ensuring that learning is enjoyable. Playing piano should be fun!
LESSON PLANS:
My focus is beginner students or those with a little foundation in music who need help honing their skills. I have worked with young children, teens, and adults. I tend to start each lesson with a warm-up, scales practice, and a theory lesson; then I choose 1-3 songs for the student to work on and play through, giving them pointers as we go. I usually assign a few "homework" exercises and write down what the student should practice before the next lesson. If there is anything specific that the student would like to learn, I find the sheet music and supply it for them so they can learn songs that align with their music tastes.
Overall, I am a flexible tutor and I love working with students to develop techniques that best fit their needs and allow them to explore their passion for music!
