About Jason
I have 14 years experience with all levels from elementary to university to adult. I've taught writing, Literature, ESL, grammar, reading, medical English, and legal English. Currently, I have teaching a diverse group of English learners from South East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. This experience spans kindergarten through university. Most of my experience has been in the university setting teaching English and Language Arts to ESL learners. I have a teacher license through the state of Utah to teach English in a Secondary Education setting. I have many years of experience doing technical writing for both the Physics and Electrical Engineering Departments at CU University. I also did translation work for the South Korean criminal courts on a temporary basis. I have published both creative writing and academic papers, and I currently work in the legal field completing drafts, summaries, and edits.

I've always been told that I would be a good teacher. My patience was pointed to as a reason for this. I kind of fell into the education field and found out that I was good at it and that--most importantly--I really enjoyed it. Students were always placed first, especially when instruction was being made and changed. Depending on how easy or how difficult the material being presented was depended on how I would change my assignments and lessons on the spot. I saw fellow teachers blame the intelligence and motivation of the students if the designed lessons weren't working. At the beginning of a unit or semester, classes learning the same material would start off with the same lessons, but the end of the semester or unit would see the lessons more applicable to the individual learning styles of the different levels in the various classes. The Tiered System of learning has been beneficial for the students,
As befit with my personality, I was strived to be a stable teacher who always knew what he was doing even when he didn't. Being an example to the students--a guide and something concrete and stable--always worked because I was told by students that they felt more comfortable coming to my class because they always knew I was going to be there I was also calm and in control. I've always wanted to be an example to the students, especially those who might not have someone to look up to (like I didn't when I was younger).
Problems with students sometimes came up, like that always will; but, I never yelled at a student or blew up in front of them. Whatever anger I had was pushed down and a stable, calm presence was put forth. The stress of the situation didn't live with me and I would still treat the student the same the next class. Noticing the ABC of a student's behavior has always worked, even if it is limited (we don't know everything going on with a student outside of class).
I prefer to give students something more concrete to work on over the abstract. Critical Thinking is important if those skills can transfer into the real world and can continue into the future. The tangible should always win over the abstract, especially with youngsters. Theory is important, but without application, the theory remains something distant in the back of their minds. Practical lessons and applications have given students the motivation they lack in certain areas because they find out how they have a stake in the learning and the activity. Stereotypes and misconceptions fall away. It's like how students will automatically think that Shakespeare is hard for no other reason other than the conception of the Bard they've held for their short lives. They need to remember that the impossible is there only until somebody does it. Then, our discussion revolves around probability.
Students have the potential to be great. All of them do, but what has held them back a lot of times is the lack of belief others have in them and the preconceptions and expectations we put on them because of marks written on a school form. Self-fulfilling prophecy will take over where motivation should be. And, if my extreme extroverted behavior and demeanor can continue to inspire others, then all the better.
My fourteen plus years of experience in teaching can only get better if I am continually able to change and do well with teamwork. The past has dictated that I can do as such, and the past is prologue. The future is where hope lays and the future is where the students will become the leaders, hopefully using the skills and learning they gained through others, like teachers.
