About Jack
Hello, my name is Jack and I am a current A-Level Maths student and I am currently predicted an A* in Maths and I got a 9 in my GCSE Maths. My school experience, especially for Maths, was exceptional; the teaching was outstanding, the way in which my school pushed you to make progress every day was inspiring, and now I want to repay that by helping GCSE maths students in a multitude of ways. Whether that be a student who is currently worried about whether they pass or a student who is aiming for a Grade 9 and aiming for near-on perfection, then I can help both category’s of students in the same way. Whilst I may not have years of experience in tutoring, I make up for in my experience as a student and the fact that I only sat my GCSE’s in the May and June of 2023, so the nerves, the build-up, and the drive for success that sometimes parents and potentially even your teacher’s don’t understand, I will understand as this was me last year. I will strive to make every student better, and whilst I can’t guarantee for students to move up by a grade or whatever alternative, I can promise that with my teaching methods and my desire and determination that if a student with the right work ethic and a willingness to learn from their mistakes that serious progress and success can be achieved.

My lessons will follow a 6-part structure:
1. A Bell Task (a starter of 6 questions which will assess how well students have recalled previous skills picked up in previous lessons)
2. Information (this is where I, as the teacher, will present the new content both on an ideological basis and on a practical basis, which will be the foundation of answering any question to a GCSE question.)
3. Teacher Model (this is where I will present a model solution which will be valuable to the students when trying to answer any question later on in the lesson as it will give them a basis to work from)
4. Trial Questions (this is where the students will practise what they have learned in the previous two stages of the lesson plan. Additionally, the ability to practise questions in Maths is more important than any theory of teacher modelling so in this step, the students are being prepared for their Maths exams, whether that be mocks or the real thing.)
5. Practise Questions (this is where the students will do some further practise without any help from me, as the teacher for about 8 minutes, in order to test the students’ independent ability. Some students over-rely on their teacher’s support and therefore are plagued when it comes to answering questions in an exam - so this process is essential to the process)
6. Plenary (this will be the end of the lesson where the students will complete a retrieval activity of the core skills they are meant to have picked up in the lesson - this is essential as some students, from my experience will say they can do a certain task after the teacher has explained it, but when it comes to answering a day, a week or a month later they will struggle to recall the theory and skills relevant to be successful in that question. This plenary will help to counter-act that process, that in my experience all students encounter.)
Then outside of my lessons, I will set homework for the students to complete either in between lessons or on a weekly basis. This will ensure that the students are keeping up with their maths and maintaining the skills that they need to be successful.
Finally towards the end of every half term we will complete an assessment module. This will be a three lesson process, where the first of which will be the student completing this paper on their own so I can assess and evaluate what they have picked up from the previous half-term and where I need to focus to fill their gaps. The second of the three lessons will be me completing what is known as a ‘Walking-Talking Mock’ which is essentially me going through an entire exam paper and showing my method and creating a bank of model solutions. To some, this may seem counter-intuitive as I won’t be there in the exam but this will allow the students to see the best way to approach any question in the future.
