About Robert

Hello, I’m Robert, a qualified Chemistry and Biology teacher rated Outstanding by OFSTED, with over 25 years of experience teaching and tutoring students at GCSE and A-Level.

I have spent my career in the classroom, most recently as Head of Science and Curriculum Area Manager for STEM at Earlscliffe College in Folkestone, and as Subject Lead for Chemistry at Dover Grammar School for Girls. I hold a BSc and an MSc in teaching Biology and Chemistry, and I have worked as an official exam marker, an EPQ supervisor and a mentor to trainee teachers. I am also a committee member of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Kent Section.

I know the GCSE and A-Level specifications inside out, including the required practicals and the CPAC standards that so many students find daunting, and I understand exactly what examiners are looking for. I have taught students from all over the world, including those studying in English as a second language and students with special educational needs.

I hold an enhanced DBS certificate and Level 3 safeguarding training, and I take the trust that families place in me very seriously. Parents can expect clear communication, reliable punctuality and honest feedback on progress.

Above all, I care about my students. Many still keep in touch with me years after leaving school, and nothing gives me greater satisfaction than seeing a student who once struggled become confident, capable and genuinely enthusiastic about science

I believe teaching is a creative art, not a mechanical process. My lessons are dialogues, not presentations. Rather than simply telling students the answer, I start by drawing out what they already know, then spark their curiosity with a hook: a thought-provoking question, a real-world problem or an intriguing story. From there, I guide them to work out the answer or deduce the rule for themselves. Students remember far more when they feel they have discovered something, rather than just been told it.

My techniques and methodology:

Building on existing knowledge so new ideas feel connected and natural
Clear, accessible explanations with a strong emphasis on precise scientific vocabulary
Model answers and worked examples, moving step by step from straightforward ideas to genuinely challenging material
Games and varied activities for the definitions and facts that simply have to be memorised
Exam technique woven throughout, with structured past paper practice and guidance on exactly what examiners are looking for
Context for every topic: I always explain where a concept is leading and why it matters, because a student who understands the purpose of what they are learning is motivated to master it

I specialise in making difficult topics manageable. Chemistry calculations are a perfect example: many students arrive convinced they can’t do them, and watching that barrier dissolve through patient, structured support is one of the most rewarding parts of my work. I celebrate effort as much as success, and use encouragement to build real confidence and independent motivation.

Typical lesson length

Lessons are usually 60 minutes, which suits most GCSE students. For A-Level students and intensive exam preparation, I also offer 90-minute sessions. I teach both online and in person, and having taught exclusively online for almost two years during the pandemic, I know how to make remote lessons just as engaging and effective as face-to-face ones.

My qualifications and experience

Rated an Outstanding teacher in an OFSTED inspection
Over 25 years of teaching and tutoring experience, including 13 years at Earlscliffe College, Folkestone
Former Head of Science and Curriculum Area Manager for STEM, and Subject Lead for Chemistry at Dover Grammar School for Girls
BSc in Teaching Biology and Chemistry (Excellent) and MSc in Teaching Biology, ELTE University, Budapest
Experienced Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) supervisor and marker
Former official exam marker and examiner for national university-entrance Biology exams
Expert in GCSE required practicals and A-Level CPAC practical standards, with consistently successful AQA CPAC inspections
Committee member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Kent Section
Teacher of the Year Medal, awarded by pupils’ vote
Enhanced DBS certificate and Level 3 safeguarding training

Who my lessons are for

GCSE Chemistry, Biology and Combined Science (ages 14–16)
A-Level Chemistry and Biology (ages 16–19)
EPQ students needing support with research, planning or write-up
Students aiming for top grades and competitive university courses, as well as those who have lost confidence and need to catch up
International students, including those studying in English as a second language
Students with SEND, with teaching adapted to each individual’s needs

My greatest reward isn’t measured in grades alone. I still hear from former students around the world, years and even decades later, and nothing pleases me more than a student telling me their lesson was the best part of their day. I’d love to help your child (or you) discover how enjoyable and rewarding science can be.
