About James Konrad

Norwegian is not my first language, but I have been working with it at an academic level since 2013. I was appointed Lecturer (Teaching) in Norwegian at UCL in 2021, and teach Norwegian language and Scandinavian translation. I have recently completed my PhD in Linguistics and English Language, where one of my case-studies examined Norwegian Nynorsk language activism.

I grew up in the south of England and moved to Scotland in 2013. I speak Catalan also, and I have a good level of French and German after studying both of those languages at A-level. In addition to translation work from Norwegian, I have also worked on translations from Swedish and Danish.

I've appeared on Norwegian radio and TV in the past, and have written articles for Norwegian online magazines and newspapers.

In my free time, I like to travel, visit pubs and cafés, and get involved in political activism from time to time.

About the lesson

I usually live in Edinburgh but commute to London during term-time to teach beginners and intermediate Norwegian at University College London; I am happy to use the same materials I use with my students with you, but I can also teach based on how you learn best and the topics that interest you most. I can teach online, although if you live in the central belt of Scotland, I would be more than happy to teach you in person.

I am a Chartered Linguist and I also have experience as a freelance translator.

Norwegian is a language with a lot of dialectal variation, and I think learning through speaking and through conversation works best. I am proficient in writing both Bokmål and Nynorsk, and would be happy to introduce you to either of the two written versions of Norwegian.

If you want to focus on achieving a specific CEFR level of Norwegian, let me know and I will try to adapt my teaching for you.
