About Kris
I’ve spent many years teaching photography in university classrooms, workshops, and one-on-one settings, and I take each student’s goals seriously. My lessons are organized, supportive, and tailored to your experience level, interests, and the kind of photographer you want to become.
I believe photography is best learned through a combination of clear instruction, practice, thoughtful feedback, and conversation. I’ll meet you where you are—whether you’re intimidated by your camera settings, struggling with composition, developing your first serious project, or looking for an experienced outside eye on an established body of work.
My critiques are constructive, specific, and encouraging. The goal is never to impose my style on your photographs, but to help you understand what is working, identify what could be stronger, and develop the confidence and visual vocabulary to make your own creative decisions.
Above all, I want lessons to be engaging, intellectually curious, and enjoyable. Photography can be technically complicated, but learning it doesn’t have to be intimidating.

I bring more than 15 years of experience as a professional photographer, artist, and educator, including assignments for National Geographic Traveler, Lonely Planet Traveller, and Sierra, and years of teaching through National Geographic, Santa Fe Workshops, and at the university level.
I work with everyone from complete beginners learning how to use a camera and understand the fundamentals of photography to more advanced photographers who want to build stronger projects, develop greater cohesion in their work, and find a more distinctive visual voice.
I teach camera fundamentals, composition, lighting, editing, portraiture, photojournalism, documentary and editorial photography, visual storytelling, and fine art photography. For more advanced photographers, we can work on developing and refining project ideas, editing and sequencing images, portfolio development, building cohesive bodies of work, and thinking critically about how individual photographs function together.
I also teach the rapidly evolving intersection of photography and artificial intelligence: how AI is changing photographic practice, image-making, authorship, and visual culture, as well as ways photographers can thoughtfully engage with emerging tools in their own creative practices.
I hold an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and my teaching combines real-world professional experience with contemporary fine-art practice. Lessons are tailored to your experience, interests, and goals—whether you’re picking up a camera for the first time or looking for thoughtful guidance as you take an established practice somewhere new.
