About Garnett

Hi, I’m Garnett, a VCA Jazz Performance graduate with over 17 years of experience playing trombone. Music has been a core part of my life since childhood, and teaching gives me a chance to share that passion while helping others find their own voice through the instrument. I love watching students build confidence, unlock creativity, and enjoy the process of making music. My lessons are designed around each student’s goals, whether that’s improving tone, learning to improvise, preparing for exams, or simply playing for fun. I focus on developing strong fundamentals (breath control, technique, and sound production) while keeping lessons musical, practical, and enjoyable. I also integrate listening and ear training, so students develop a deeper understanding of style and expression. Lessons typically run for 45–60 minutes, and I teach all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced players. I’m based in St Kilda, and lessons can be held at my home studio or yours anywhere in Melbourne. My goal as a teacher is to make the trombone feel approachable, expressive, and exciting, helping each student discover not just how to play, but how to really make music.

About the lesson

As a VCA Jazz Performance graduate with 17 years of experience on trombone, I focus on helping students build a deep connection with the instrument, not just technically, but also musically. My teaching combines structured skill development with creative exploration, allowing students to learn solid fundamentals while discovering their own unique sound and style.

I tailor each lesson to the student’s level and goals, whether that’s improving tone and range, learning to read and interpret music, or developing improvisation and stylistic awareness in jazz or classical settings.

Lessons typically run for 45–60 minutes, and I teach students of all ages and levels, from beginners learning the basics to advanced players refining technique and improvisation.

Based in St Kilda, I offer lessons at my home studio or at your home anywhere in the Melbourne area.
