About Anirudh

I'm an ex-engineer who has mentored more than 200 music learners in the last 15+ years, specialising in guitar, voice, rhythm and composition. Thanks to my wonderful parents, I started singing at a very young age and was training in Indian classical music before I started playing guitar, bass and drums with a number of bands. While it was exciting to be pursuing music full-time, especially as a multi-instrumentalist, I felt that my original connection to music was fading away. That prompted me to dedicate a large portion of time to one of my first instruments - my voice. With that goal in mind, I began training in the Dhrupad style of Indian classical music, which focuses on extremely subtle nuances of pitch in the context of raag and taal. Along the way, I also developed my skill with the rudra veena and mridangam. I found that the better I was at a few simple fundamentals, the more connected I was with music. My ability to express myself grew in ways I couldn't ever imagine. While I have a lot more to learn, I've developed many skills, which I share with anyone who is interested in being a better musician, no matter what their level. If you'd like to give it a try, all you have to do is ask :) Wherever you may find yourself, I hope your skill continues to grow. May you find a teacher who guides you in the right direction while letting you be free to go your own way. My musical experience includes: + time - polyrhythm, konakkol (South Indian voiced percussion), Indian taal, poetic meter, drums; + frequency - Dhrupad (Indian classical), Western counterpoint, audio recording, editing, mixing, guitar, voice, rudra veena, cello; + expression - poetry, composition, improvisation, songwriting, auditory perception

Music, like language, is mainly about patterns. Just like authors and speakers use language creatively, composers discover and creatively use musical patterns to make the songs you love. How do musical patterns work? How can we understand musical patterns and their effects? How do we make music in ways that satisfy us? These are some of the questions I have been trying to answer for the last 20 years, and although I’m still learning something new each day, I have some pretty solid answers so far. With those answers, I’m now in a position to help you do 3 things well: 1. Understand music 2. Perform music (on your choice of instrument) 3. Compose music. How do I do this? 1. Understanding your goals and giving you a roadmap 2. Project-based learning instead of syllabus-based learning 3. Providing context by connecting concepts with real musical examples 4. Developing your critical listening and expression skills 5. Prioritising practical skills over theory 6. Review with class notes 7. Regular interaction and feedback outside class hours In addition, you have the option to attend group classes and workshops to supplement your one-on-one sessions. All that you need to begin is your curiosity. I look forward to hearing from you :)
