About the lesson

I deliver excellent written advice on programming or design work and I teach thoughtfully designed interactive tutorials and workshops of any length in-person or online.

Want quick and comprehensive advice on a programming, design or discrete mathematics task? Send it to me along with a list of questions and concerns that you have. I'll send you a quote and get straight into it if you're happy. No fuss. Just speedy, expert advice in a friendly, encouraging package. I'll tailor my feedback to your experience level and, if we do multiple rounds, I'll do my best to learn what kinds of explanations and teaching strategies work best for you while we iterate towards a great solution!

Want to learn something new? Complete a larger project? Get ongoing support to pass a class or overcome challenges at work? Or even change career? That's great! I've helped people achieve all of those things!

We'll start by identifying how you want to learn and setting our objectives.
Then I'll go away and have a think before proposing a learning strategy to you, and, once we're both happy with it, I'll write and deliver a bespoke plan for our first session.

Our tutorials will be interactive, not lectures. I'll introduce a concept and talk about it *with* you, not *at* you. I'll demonstrate a design or programming technique and then we'll practice it together with immediate and supportive feedback for you.

Along the way, we'll regularly check-in so that we can revise the teaching techniques, learning strategy and objectives as necessary to acheive your goals.

I have no interest in wasting your time or money with unnecessary lessons nor in retaining you as a permanent student. I want the satisfaction of seeing you meet your objectives and "graduating". I'll recommend other, cheaper resources where I think they will serve you better than 1-on-1 tutoring because I want to teach you the things that you couldn't learn better elsewhere.

I'm happy to deliver all tutorials (lessons) in-person in Manchester or online with a call and appropriate software. Tutorials can be of any length with appropriate breaks for your and my benefit if they exceed 1 hour.

I offer code review, design feedback, lesson plans and learning advice in writing or as a tutorial session and am happy to follow-up over multiple rounds.

I've lost count of all the occasions where Colin has shown unyielding patience and an eye for detail for me to polish several versions of a code I was struggling with to come up with a final satisfying answer.
I've always admired Colin's coding acumen but his ability to help people join his skill level is peerless.
I basically owe my getting into the software industry because of Colin's dedication and I am eternally indebted to him - it would be a waste for *anyone* to not consider Colin as a stellar choice.

If you are from a group that is historically disadvantaged (working class, women, people of colour, queer people, religious minorities) then you can have a discount if you think you need one and you don't need to justify yourself to me.

If you are trying to learn something for a progressive/left cause (a tenants union, a liberation, labour or socialist movement etc) then you can have a discount of up to 100% if you need it, but you do need to briefly explain what your project is.

If you need a discount to access my services, please specify what you are comfortable paying.

I charge a flat rate per hour for contact time (the duration of our tutorial sessions) and preparation time (the time it takes me to design our tutorials; write lesson plans, take-home exercises, and feedback; review work and materials that you've sent me; and do any necessary research).

I will quote my maximum preparation time in advance, so there will be no unpleasant surprises, only pleasant surprises when I take less time than expected and still smash it :)
