About Julia

My family encouraged me to start playing chess when I was 4 years old and even though it was difficult at first, I soon started playing better and won my first local competition at 6. At 10 years old, I became a National Champion in Romania. In 2018, I moved to the UK to study and started a University chess society in which I was the Vice-President and Coach. And ever since, I have been teaching students of all ages and levels, through group and private lessons, both face to face and online. As well as this, I am a Chess Coach certified by the CSC (Chess in Schools and Communities UK organisation) and have been an Online Chess Tutor for Mindful Chess UK since the start of 2024, helping dozens of students from 4 to 60+ years old improve their chess strategy and confidence.

About the lesson

For over 8 years, I have been teaching students of all levels, in person (schools, universities, chess clubs) and from the comfort of their own homes. I have extensive experience teaching children, teenagers and adults of all ages and levels, specifically beginners and intermediate players. I have an Enhanced DBS check and a lot of experience working with students from SEND schools or with learning disabilities. I am calm, patient and will always structure my lessons around you or your children's needs and learning style, combining chess theory with fun examples, activities and puzzles. My lessons usually last between 30 and 60 minutes, with most students taking weekly or biweekly sessions in the evenings or weekends, but I am very flexible. So if you are interested, book a free intro lesson today. Let's play a chess game and start your learning journey!

I came across Julia by chance and she had this vibe that just seemed like she would be kind and considerate with me. I was an absolute beginner going into this but honestly since being taught by Julia I feel more confident and I have a solid way of understanding whats happening. I'm autistic and have a horrible memory but Julia helped me understand and remember in terms suited for my brain and she was so amazing for me. She has patience and compassion when I feel doubtful or struggle, she encourages in such a kind way that I feel so comfortable with her. She has such a vast knowledge of something so beautiful and it was amazing learning from her. Thanks to Julia I can understand and be able to play confidently now! I really recommend her for people of any level! Thank you so much x

Julia has been teaching me chess, and I’ve really enjoyed learning with her. She’s patient, explains ideas clearly, and adapts each lesson to my level, making even difficult concepts easy to understand.

What I appreciate most is that she encourages me to think through positions rather than simply giving me the answers. It’s made learning both enjoyable and rewarding, and I’ve already noticed my confidence improving. I’d happily recommend Julia to anyone looking for a friendly and knowledgeable chess tutor.
