About Rebekah

Where have you previously taught?

I have taught extensively at University level, at University of East Anglia, Kings College London and University College London in all aspects of Modern History. I have also mentored students a A Level looking to attend university

How long have you been teaching?

I have been teaching since 2014 and I have taught scores of people in that time.

Tell me about some of your students.

I have taught a variety of different students across the country with different backgrounds. I have also taught students where English is not their first language.

My aim is to give students confidence in their own judgements and opinions by helping them to understand what the question is asking and help to use their existing knowledge to find an answer. Rebecca* for example started my classes as a lower second class student: after 12 weeks she had grown in confidence was achieving high 2:1s in her essays. She went on the achieve a first class degree.

Ryan* had recently moved schools and was struggling with the additional workloads and pressures. He felt that the knowledge he had gained from his other school didn't help him. During our sessions, he came to appreciate how he could use what he already knew to help him with the lessons at his new school. After being predicted a C at A Level he went on to achieve a B grade.

Laura* was an incredibly gifted student but she was very anxious about her exams and getting into university. I helped her to think about her exam strategy and what techniques she was going to use to help her unpick the different questions, and answer them effectively. Laura achieved her predicted grade and is currently attending her university of choice.

About the lesson

My teaching is catered towards the individual: how do you learn best? I give lessons to anyone with an interest in history and/or politics, particularly at A level or degree standard.
Initially, I want to learn a little bit about you- what do you enjoy, what do you find easy and what do you find difficult? History is not just about facts and dates: my teaching aims to help to you use information to weave together an argument to answer whatever essay question you might be faced with. With that in mind, I aim to use a series of tasks and discussions to help you think about what questions you need to explore in history, and how to apply your knowledge to the question. My aim is to develop strategies that work for you, and can be applicable whatever the question might be.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach History, with a particular focus on Modern British history although I have previously taught European history from 1500 onwards. I also teach politics and political though from 1700 to the present day.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold a 2:1 degree in History from the University of East Anglia and an Masters in Modern British and Irish History from the University of Edinburgh. I am currently in my final year of studying for my PhD at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London, on the rebuilding of the Palace of Westminster in the nineteenth century.

- How much do you charge?

For face to face lessons I charge £14 per hour. For online tuition I charge £12 per hour. Please contact me for information about group sessions.

- Where do you teach?

I live in Tadcaster and I’m happy to teach anyone within a 15 mile radius, including Leeds, York, Selby and Sherburn-in-Elmet. I would consider further distances depending on the circumstances. I provide face to face and online tuition.

- When are you available?

I am available most times - mornings, afternoons and evenings plus weekends. I am also available during most holidays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach anyone from age 14, although I prefer to teach post 16 (A Level) and university level students. I also teach adults who wish to improve their qualifications, or simply wish to pursue an interest in History or Politics.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Online tutoring would take place through skype, for both individual or group sessions. Although I find face to face tutoring more effective, online tutoring can help people with busy lives and limited places to study.
