About Kenneth
I have trained 14 Ph.D. students, 2 M.S. students and 17 undergraduate students in my research laboratory. All of these students had to write research abstracts, scientific publications and/or theses/dissertations. My lab has published 163 papers in scientific journals on which I was either the lead (first author) or the senior (last) author on 103. All of my graduate students have published scientific papers, and all have published first-author papers. The native language of many of these students was not English.

I have largely taught students with bachelor degrees, but many of these were foreign with minimal skills in English, either spoken or written. My approach has been to ask the student to write two paragraphs on anything they were in, and then to sit with the student and go over how I think they could improve the paper. While English grammar was an important component of this lesson, it was mostly focused on clarity and expression of what the student wanted to convey. Over time, the student began to write longer, more complex essays, and eventually to write scientific papers consisting of an introduction, and then sections on methodology, results, and finally a discussion on how the student's result impacted what was known and how it advanced the field.
This method will be modified so that students with different backgrounds, interests and goals can write simple paragraphs on subjects of their choosing, and then progressing to more detailed, complex descriptions of subject matter of interest to the student.
