About Mai
Hey! My name is Mai, and I’m a current Engineering student passionate about helping high school students navigate their studies. Having been in their shoes only a few years ago, I can understand the challenges they face and want to provide guidance in helping students stay ahead of their work and to avoid last minute cramming, and overall ensure they feel confident when exam time arrives.

My tutoring style is based around 3 key concepts I've learnt from my reading of research surrounding long term retention.
These techniques can be universally applicable across all subjects, equipping students with the best strategies for lifelong learning.
We will shift away from passive rereading and from just ‘recognising concepts’ and instead deeply engage with the material in a process we call Active recall. I will challenge students with activities such as ‘teach’ a concept to me from memory, and test if they can create their own practice questions for a topic (surprisingly more difficult than it seems). This approach identifies knowledge gaps and lets us refine our focus on weaker areas.
We will revisit key concepts at gradually longer intervals (a system called Spaced Repetition) to shift information from short to long-term memory, preparing your child to recall the information months down the line and we can help alleviate the stress and workload before a big test.
Instead of covering one topic in isolation, I will integrate various different problem types, switch between topics and pull from prior learning. This is a well known concept called Interleaved Learning, which will make sure students are able to adapt to any question thrown at them.
Lesson Structure: I believe it's best to have weekly lessons kept between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours (depending on year level) to ensure students are able to stay motivated and focused for the entire duration of the lesson.
Prior to the lesson I would like insight on what topic the student is learning in their class as well as communication on what aspect of said topic they struggle with, to make sure the lesson is tailored towards them.
