About Helen

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching all ages privately since 2015, and have been a visiting oboe tutor at schools such as Marlborough College (Wiltshire), Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School (Shepherd's Bush) and King Edward VI School (Southampton), as well as at Barnet Music Service (BEAT). I have also given group oboe masterclasses and mentored students at Guernsey Music Service and In Harmony Lambeth, amongst others.

As a professional oboist, my recent orchestral experience includes a contract as Principal Oboe with the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden from 2018 - 19, and extensive freelance work with the orchestras around the world such as the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

I also appeared in the on-stage orchestra for the National Theatre's production of 'Amadeus' from 2016 - 2018.

About the lesson

I am a freelance oboist and tutor, originally from Cheshire and now based in London. I enjoy passing on my musical knowledge and experience to others, and look forward to hearing from you!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach oboe and cor anglais from beginner to advanced level (up to conservatoire entrance), and offer reed-making and music theory lessons either alongside this or separately.

I can also offer general musicianship advice and assistance, for example for GCSE or A Level exams.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I hold Master of Music and Bachelor of Music (Hons) degrees from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Orchestral Performance from the Royal College of Music in London.

I also spent one year training with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Sweden.

- How much do you charge?

£40 per hour, or £25 per half hour.

- Where do you teach?

I can travel to students' houses in South, West and Central London areas. I would also be happy to negotiate Skype lessons if applicable!

- When are you available?

As I am a freelance musician, I can be quite flexible with timings, and am happy to discuss this with prospective students.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I enjoy teaching all ages and abilities, from children to adults.

I teach oboe and cor anglais to an advanced level, and music theory and musicianship to ABRSM Grade 5 standard.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can prepare students for ABRSM exams if desired, as well as auditions, competitions, concerts, recitals and school/college performance exams.

I am also happy to teach those who would like to learn for fun, without the stress of exams.
