About Oliver

My name is Oliver Stewart. I am a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where I concentrated in Finance and Business Analytics. I am from Cape Town, South Africa. Last year, I interned at a distressed investing company (a company that specializes in buying the debt of companies in financial trouble at a discount) in Cape Town. Wharton is one of the top business schools globally, and I have been fortunate enough to benefit greatly from outstanding professors and students. I’ve listed some of my favorite courses below: - Advanced Corporate Finance - Capital Markets - Investment Management - Valuation - Financial Derivatives - Advanced Topics in Private Equity - Fixed Income Securities - Distressed Investing and Value Creation - International Banking As you can see, I’ve had broad exposure to various areas in finance. I’ve learned a ton at Wharton and am very grateful for the opportunity to have completed a business degree at this world-class institution.

About the lesson

Being able to value companies and the merit of business decisions is the key to being a successful businessman (or woman of course). Direct applications of valuation skill sets can be found in investment banking, private equity, and investing in real estate, bonds, and public equities. It is also critical for any corporate finance position, where your job may require you to decide which projects to pursue (for example, a retail store owner may have to choose between opening a new store in Philadelphia or Miami: which one will be most valuable to the firm?). Essentially any and every business decision entails making choices in order to maximize value. The best businessmen can identify sources of value and make decisions that create the most value. My goal is to provide students with an intuitive understanding of finance and valuation, and the skills required to apply this understanding in the real world. I want it to serve as an introduction, but also ensure that the course is comprehensive.
