About Nonkululeko

Nonkululeko Dube is a photographer and writer (b. in 1995) in Port Dunford a small settlement in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal South African province, based in Johannesburg. She is an alumna of The Market Photo Workshop as a Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Program student 2020 and currently working at The Market Photo Workshop as a course assistant for Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Program. Recently interned with Johannesburg Art Gallery working with archives specifically on Federated Union of Black Artists known as FUBA archive. Nonkululeko started working with Inkanyiso.org founded by Prof. Sir Zanele Muholi in 2018 immediately after she graduated for her photography enrollment with Inkanyiso Mobile School of Photography. Most of her work published by inkanyiso.org is based on sexuality and documenting events. Her first exhibition was a group collaborative - project exhibition at the Market Photo Workshop in collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy on Sexuality and Gender-Based Violence titled “Volume 44”. Her second group exhibition was in Heidelberg, Germany at the Queer Festival titled “Breaking Gender Stereotypes”. She had a group exhibition with The Stevenson Gallery titled “Nonrepresentational” in 2020. She was a participant of Ubuciko Mentorship Programme 2020, She was on the Orms Mentorship Programme 2020 top 5, She also exhibited in a 2020 student group exhibition at The Market Photo Workshop. Recently selected as a special mention photographer for the Rotterdam Photo Festival 2021 in Netherlands. She Is one of the participating photographers on Ihiya Exhibition that was exhibited at The Windybrow Art Centre which celebrates Africanism and traditional medicine in 2021. As a photographer her work focuses on documentary and conceptualized photography., She focuses on recording memories of the past and traumatic instants as a catharsis. She aims to discover environmental and social issues that prompt humans to start investigating within and questioning the norm. Most of her work is inspired by her background and the way she was raised as a girl child, she always felt growing up that she was oppressed by her own traditional and religious values. Also investigating the echoes of apartheid in South Africa specifically on police brutality. Currently. She is working on a project called baby mamas, in collaboration with BaMu Art Foundation founded by Dr. Terry Dhlamini and Prof. Muholi this project is meant for young women who had kids at a young age and were never able to achieve their goals. The aim of the project is to give photographic skills and empower these young from uMbumbulu in KwaZulu-Natal.
