About Jo
I just recently moved back to the US after spending the last 5 years in Paris, where I completed two graduate programs at French universities in the fields of social sciences and urban planning. The diverse experiences I had in Paris - working as a language assistant in public schools and a teacher in private language schools, working in a public library, interning in a community-based organization, sociological research - let me perfect my French in a variety of environments.
As a former language student myself who really benefitted from 1-on-1 classes, I am passionate about teaching and helping students gain the confidence to reach their goals. Aside from being a very beautiful language, French is a key that can open so many doors and create connections with francophone cultures all over the world. I really look forward to sharing my love of the language with you and helping you reach your personal goals!

I like to tailor lessons to the goals, level and learning style of the individual student to make sure that classes meet your particular needs. People learn French for a number of reasons, and whether yours are school, travel or business related, personalized lessons can help you get to that next level.
Beginner students will be introduced to the most important aspects of the language - primary sounds, sentence structure and thematic vocabulary. Students will be walked through the basics of grammar, vocab and prononciation which will let them develop confidence and take risks. Exercises will be varied and interactive (no repetitive worksheets) and will put students in real-life, natural settings for them to practice listening and speaking.
For those with a strong foundation in the language, I help students strengthen their reading and writing abilities by using creative writing prompts, creating fun comics, analyzing advanced passages, and integrating multimedia materials. I also work with advanced students who are preparing to take standardized tests. Together we develop strategies for answering questions on passages, reading and synthesizing material quickly, and structuring writing and oral expression in clear and concise ways.
