About Matthew
I studied cello performance at the University of Michigan with Richard Aaron, former professor of cello @ the University of Michigan, Juilliard School and current professor at the San Francisco Conservatory. I've been featured as a cellist and educator at some of the nation's leading music festivals including the Aspen Music Festival and School, Chautauqua Institute, and National Youth Orchestra of the United States. Previous teachers of mine include leading members of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and prominent cello professors from Rice and Northwestern University.

My teaching philosophy has two parts: (1) disassembling the complexities of the cello and mastering technique so that (2) total musical freedom and creativity can be reached. I draw on technical methods from the great French, German, and Russian masters and through my own teachers, have distilled their methods so that anyone - no matter level - can learn and improve. In my lessons, I strive to understand my students' struggles personally and encourage them to become masters of themselves!
