Hi!!

I am a native Chinese speaker and currently a Master’s student studying Digital Sociology at the University of Edinburgh. I hold an IELTS score of 7.0 and CET-6 qualification, which means I can communicate complex ideas smoothly in English and explain Chinese language rules clearly for English-speaking learners. Before I came to Edinburgh for postgraduate study, I completed my undergraduate degree with high academic grades and gained valuable professional experience working in mainstream media organisations in China. During my media internships, I wrote feature stories, conducted interviews and analysed public narratives, which helped me develop strong skills in written expression, storytelling and cross-cultural communication.

This background sets me apart from many other Chinese tutors. I do not only teach basic vocabulary and conversation. I understand how language works in real media, public discussion and academic writing. If you hope to read Chinese news, social commentary or social science texts, I can guide you through these materials with my existing expertise. I am patient, observant and good at identifying individual learning barriers quickly.

As someone who is also learning and studying in a second-language environment in the UK, I deeply understand the struggles of learning a foreign language. I know how intimidating it can be to speak a new language, so I always keep my teaching style supportive and encouraging. I enjoy introducing Chinese culture from modern, contemporary perspectives, not only traditional culture. Whether you want to learn Chinese for travel, university study, professional work or personal interest, I can adapt my knowledge and skills to fit your journey.

About the lesson

I design fully personalised Chinese lessons built entirely around your unique goals, learning style and existing level, whether you are a complete beginner starting from pinyin, an intermediate learner hoping to boost conversational fluency, or an advanced student preparing for HSK examinations, academic reading or professional communication. Before our first formal session, I will have a short chat with you to understand exactly what you want to achieve: some learners focus on casual daily conversation for travelling and socialising, while others aim to master formal written Chinese for university research, media reading and essay writing.

In each lesson, we combine multiple dimensions of language learning. We start with pronunciation and tone correction, the most challenging part for many English speakers, and we will practise real-life dialogues instead of rigid textbook sentences. We will cover vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures, and I will use clear, simple English to explain tricky grammatical concepts, so you never feel confused or stuck. I also integrate Chinese cultural context into our learning, which helps you understand the background behind phrases and idioms rather than just memorising words.

For students interested in media and social science, I can bring in newspaper articles, short features and social media texts as learning materials. This is a special strength of my teaching. Homework will be light and targeted, and after every class I will send you concise notes and exercises to consolidate what we learned. I adjust the pace flexibly: we can slow down to revisit difficult topics or move faster if you pick up content quickly. My classes are low-pressure and encouraging, and I always create a safe space for you to practise speaking and make mistakes without worry.
